The houses in Cuyahoga Falls

The centre of town is a National Register historic district running along Front Street and Portage Trail, from Church Square down to the Cuyahoga River. It is about twenty acres of mostly one to three storey masonry commercial buildings, with Late Gothic Revival and Neoclassical churches on Church Square, and its period of significance runs from 1836 to 1954.

Front Street spent roughly forty years as a pedestrian mall before it was returned to two-way traffic in 2017 and 2018. That change is why the downtown reads differently now than it did to anyone who remembers it from the eighties.

The housing is mostly post-war. Capes and ranches dominate, with an older pre-1939 layer nearer the river and the downtown. The city also took in Northampton Township in the mid-1980s, which added both land and housing of a different age again.

The practical effect is that a buyer here is usually choosing between a smaller older house close to Front Street and a larger post-war house further out for similar money. That is a real decision and it is worth making deliberately.

Common questions

What kind of houses are in Cuyahoga Falls? Mostly post-war capes and ranches, with an older pre-war layer near the downtown and the river. Both trade well. They just attract different buyers and want different preparation before listing.

Is the downtown historic district a complication if I own there? For a house, usually not. It is worth checking before you plan exterior work, because a listed district can carry review requirements that an ordinary street does not. I will check the specifics for your address rather than guess.
