Where I work

Six towns with a page of their own, because the housing in each is genuinely different and one page cannot say anything useful about all of them at once.

The towns

Each page shows that town’s own period map and says what its houses are actually like. Five of the six are places I have closed in, and those closings are listed on the page for that town.

The reason to split them up is that the housing really is different. Akron runs from pre-war Craftsman to post-war ranch within the same square mile. Maple Heights is mostly post-war brick bungalows with repeating floor plans, which makes comparable sales unusually easy to find. Barberton was laid out as a planned industrial town in 1891 and still reads that way. Copley is a township rather than a city, which changes some of the paperwork. Writing one page covering all of that would mean saying nothing specific about any of it.

If your town is not on the list, it does not mean I will not work there. It means I have not yet got enough to say about it to justify a page, and I would rather tell you that than pad one out.

  • Page of the 1916 Sanborn fire insurance map of Akron showing Arch, Adams and Nebraska streets, every house drawn as its own numbered lot AkronSummit County Akron is where I am based and where most of my work is. The housing runs from pre-war Craftsman to post-war ranch, often on the same street.
  • Plate from the 1916 Sanborn fire insurance map of Cuyahoga Falls, showing East Front Street, Broad Street and the Cuyahoga River Cuyahoga FallsSummit County A river town with a pre-war downtown and a great deal of post-war housing around it.
  • Historic American Buildings Survey measured drawings of the Arnold House in Copley, showing first and second floor plans FairlawnSummit County A post-war suburb on Akron’s west side, built mostly in the fifties and sixties and still filling in.
  • Page of the 1916 Sanborn fire insurance map of Barberton showing Lucas Street, Houston Street and East Hopocan Avenue, every building drawn as its own lot BarbertonSummit County A planned industrial town from 1891, and the housing still shows it.
  • Historic American Buildings Survey measured drawings of the Arnold House in Copley, showing first and second floor plans CopleySummit County A township rather than a city, with a longer history than most of what surrounds it.
  • 1950 United States census enumeration district map for Maple Heights City, Cuyahoga County, drawn in blueprint white on blue Maple HeightsCuyahoga County A post-war Cleveland suburb, and the one town on this list in a different county.

I also work in Stow, Hudson, Tallmadge, Green, Munroe Falls, Silver Lake, Norton, Bath, Richfield, Twinsburg, Macedonia, Mogadore, Peninsula, and across Medina County and the Cleveland area. There is no page for those yet because I would only be repeating myself, and a page that says nothing is worse than no page at all.
